One of the most talented designers in the country, fashion designer Masaba Gupta carved her niche early. from her quirky print to head turning cuts, this stunner knows the nuances of fashion just so well. With her recent store launches at Kalaghoda, Mumbai and Quest Mall, Kolkata, Masaba is making sure no one is left behind when it comes to style and fashion. A quick chat with the dusky beauty:

Q. Congratulations for your store at Kalaghoda along with Nitya Arora. What are we going to expect from this store?

A. Thank you . Well, its  a mix of both our identities and designs over the years. Its a place for me to showcase more out of the box stuff and experimental styles.

Q. You also launched your first store in Kolkata. What do you think of the market and demands in the East of India? What sets Kolkata apart from other cities?

A. Kolkata is a very forward thinking market. The women here love to dress up and are a classsic mix of conventional and quirky. And they love textile. Kolkata has more character than other cities and a lovely charm . The saris will be key here as they are the biggest sellers.

Q. Your quirky prints and pop colors set you apart from other designers. What are the factors you keep in mind while designing? What is the inspiration behind the out-of-the-box designs?

A. I keep in mind functionality and wearibilty first. For me a design that cannot be worn is of no use and I also try and keep it as out of the box without compromising on anything.

Q. Fashion designing was not your first career choice. What made you pick this career up?

A. It was a fluke I landed up at fashion school and there was no looking back.

Q. There was a point you wanted to be a tennis player, did you ever think of playing cricket like your father?

A. I would have if cricket for women was more widespread.

Q. Almost all the big names in the film industry have worn your designs. But, is there anyone in particular you love designing for? Is there anyone on your wish list?

A. Aishwarya Rai Bacchan
