We all love and care for our parents, that goes without saying. But at times, we are not able look after them because of distance and lack of time. Even though we are in a different city or country we keep thinking about them, because deep inside we know they are getting old and need our support. However, even though you are staying with them or close to them, you may find it bit difficult to handle them, because as they say old people are just like small kids! Here are 5 tips on how to look after your ageing parents.
Old age attracts many diseases and physical ailments. That’s part and parcel of old age. They may feel irritated if they are not physically fit. So, you need to understand that their mood swings and irritation have a valid reason.
Be a patient listener
The elderly often feel neglected and deprived of your love and attention. Some of them don’t have good company. This results in loneliness. All you can do is be a good listener, because they just want someone to listen to them!
Show you care
Ideally you must spend quality time with them, that’s more than enough. But if are way too busy in your career, make sure you spend some time with them. Also, in that case, arrange for someone who would look after them and gives them company, say a caretaker. But remember, your responsibility does not end there.
Take them out
It may not be possible on every weekend, but sometimes you can plan an outing or make arrangements for their recreation. Family gatherings are the best for the elderly. They love to spend time with people of their age or play with grand children. This also helps in strengthening family bond.
Gratitude brings happiness
Remember it is a payback time for you. Never forget the pains they have taken to bring you up, things, small and big, they have done for you. Just tell them once in a while what it means to you. That will give them immense happiness.
Always remember, it’s all about loving your parents!
