Coronavirus: Passing the Time During Self-Quarantine at Home

All around the globe, several countries have ordered the closure of public spaces such as malls, theatres, pubs as well as educational institutions in an attempt to contain the spread of COVID – 19, which has been rapidly spreading over the past month. Many companies have shut down and instructed the employees to work from home. Social activity has decreased to a great extent, major sports leagues and matches have been suspended, festivals and celebrations have come to a halt and holiday trips have been cancelled given the restrictions on foreign travel. At this point, we are in a situation to spend at least the next few weeks at home with family.

Before you continue reading further, it is suggested to go through the do’s and don’ts suggested by MOHFW to help ourselves against covid-19.

You’re staying home, and you need a distraction, here are a few suggestions that will help you make the best of your quarantine at home.

1. Reconnect

In this fast-paced world, all of us are always on the move, and though we live under the same roof, we rarely spend time with our family. For better or worse, the COVID – 19 outbreak has given us the chance to reconnect and spend quality time with our family and loved ones. Sit down together and catch up with each others’ lives. It is also the best time to rebuild broken or faded relationships. All of us are so used to having our social lives online that we fail to cherish real ones. It’s time to go back a few decades and enjoy the company of others.

2. Read

If you are away from home, either for work or education for 10 – 12 hours, you barely have enough time for yourself, let alone relax and read a book. You just have enough time to catch the news or watch a single episode on Netflix. Well, now you have an excess of time, and you can start that book you have wanted to read for ages. It does not matter which genre you read, as the important thing here is you continuing the habit of reading. If you are a student, you can prepare for any of your upcoming exams as well.

3. Watch

I don’t have to mention this here as most of you will anyway be streaming series all day and night. In addition to the list of shows available on Netflix and Amazon Prime, you can also watch the recent Oscar-nominated movies like the Parasite, The Irishman, Marriage Story, Knives Out Ford Vs Ferrari, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, 1917 and Little Women along with your family. You can also catch up on movies from regional languages or travel back to your golden classics.

4. Cook

It’s time to take out those baking bowls and mixers you have never used! What better thing to do while you are stuck at home all than bake!? Experiment and try out new recipes of cakes, cookies and pies. Don’t worry about the quantity being too much as you have the entire family to gobble it up in seconds. You can also try your hand at preparing exotic or elaborate dishes that you usually don’t have the time for. It will be a change of routine for not just you, but everyone else at home will have exciting meals as well. If you aren’t a good cook, then it’s your chance to learn and master it.

5. Exercise

I am sure you would have created detailed schedules for maintaining your physical fitness and dropped it after two days due to some hindrances or lack of time. Well, now is when you ought to take out those schedules or form new ones and get your body working out! You will not have other commitments, and it will be easier for you to stick to your work out plan. Moreover, you can choose simple and easy do at-home exercises. Ask your family to support you and help you exercise regularly. You can also work on a suitable diet if you are focused on a good result.

Conclusion

In times like these, it is important to make the best of the situation. You have been given a break from routine life and a chance to look at your past and plan your future by introspection and reflection. You have now extra time to do the list of things you have wanted to but never had the time to. All of us had a hobby or a skill that we left due to hectic schedules. It might be singing, dancing, music, art, stitching or anything else. You can pick up where you left off and keep in touch with your skills.

Above all, stay safe, take necessary precautions, DON’T PANIC and make everyone around you aware of what is going on in the world.
