5 Substitutes to Egg for Vegetarians

Some of us don’t eat eggs because of personal choice, religious restrictions or allergy issues. But if you are into cooking and come across interesting recipes of baked stuffs or cakes and pastries, finding eggs as main ingredient in them disappoints you, right? Well, don’t worry, here are some tried and tasted egg substitutes for you which you can easily find in any supermarket and, rest assured, these are completely vegan.

Flax seeds

Mix 1 tbsp flax seeds powder and ¼ cup water. For better results, soak flax seeds for at least 15 minutes; it equals one egg in terms of consistency. It has bit of a nutty flavor, but it is the best option for whole grain baked goods which are heavier.

Silken tofu

Silken tofu is another option. In terms of flavour, it is tasteless, but you can use it while making pies. I tried making pumpkin pie and it works well. You can also use it in brownies, quick breads and in cakes. Use ¼ cup whipped silken tofu in lieu of one egg.

A mix of baking soda and vinegar

It is the best egg substitute for fluffier baked goods, especially the chocolate flavored ones. You can use this mix while making muffins and cupcakes. Mix 1 tbsp of baking soda and 1 tbsp white vinegar. This mix equals one egg. Use apple cited vinegar.

Ener- G

It is commercially used product for eggless baking recipes and is made from potato and tapioca starch. It can be easily used in lieu of egg white. Mix 1½ tbsp powder and 2 tbsp water, whisk well. You can add more powder as per your requirement. It is flavorless and so won’t affect the taste of your recipes. It is the best option for people who want low-fat food. You can use it in all baked goods.

Banana and applesauce

You can also use banana as it’s sticky and creamy in texture. Use ¼ cup banana puree in lieu of one egg. Unsweetened Applesauce also works the same as bananas. Use ¼ cup applesauce for in lieu of one egg. Use it in cakes, pancakes and quick breads.
